Using STRO-1 cell surface marker antibodies for cancer research
The stroma is the extracellular collagen and matrix forming the framework of animal cells, synthesised by fibroblasts. STRO-1 antibodies have been used in stromal stem cell studies since 1991. However, these were in vitro experiments. Now, we at Novus Biologicals have extended our stem cell marker antibody database with a novel mouse monoclonal STRO-1 antibody, chosen for its ability to bind to stromal stem cells in vitro.
STRO-1 was first identified as a stem cell marker by Simmons et al in 1991, when novel monoclonal STRO-1 antibodies identified STRO-1 as a cell surface protein in human bone marrow stromal precursor cells. STRO-1 was shown to bind to approximately 10% of mononuclear bone marrow cells, the majority of which were nucleated precursors of erythroids (red blood cells). CFU-F (fibroblast colony-forming) cells were exclusively the domain of STRO-1+ cells.
Long-term bone marrow culture of STRO-1cells yielded several distinct stromal populations, including adipocytes, fibroblastic elements and smooth muscle cells. Cells isolated from these cultures later showed the ability to form adherent layers of cells identical to those of the parent cultures. These layers could then be used to support generation of mature hematopoietic cells and clonogenic cells in an enriched CD34+ cell population.
In 1994, Gronthos and Simmons showed that STRO-1+ cells can also act as osteoprogenitors, with the CFU-F component able to differentiate into functional osteoblasts. Recent studies have shown tumour-initiating stem cells to be present in osteosarcomas. However, researchers were unable to identify a specific stem cell marker. In July 2010, Amit S. Adhikari identified CD117 and STRO-1 as markers for mouse and human osteosarcoma stem cells in vivo. Our new in vitro STRO-1 antibody opens up exciting possibilities in metastasis research.

I Underwent a Botox Treatment, What’s next?
This guest post written by Dr Raj Acquilla
Having highly effective results of a non-invasive, anti-aging treatment, Botox injections provide a more convenient and easy recovery process than other surgical treatments.
Botox injections are virtually painless and have a minimum recovery time. The best being that you can continue with your daily chores immediately after the procedure. It only takes ten to fifteen minutes to administer the injection, which makes you time to even schedule an appointment during lunch break.
After the Botox treatment you may notice a slight redness around the treatment area and rarely might you experience minor bruising or swelling. You may cover-up discolouration with a bit of mineral based makeup. The redness and swelling will disappear within first few hours of treatment. Your cosmetic physician will decide and inform you as to when you need to schedule a follow up appointment to retouch the Botox treatment areas if necessary.
In order to speed up the healing process your cosmetic physician would instruct you to hold a cold wash cloth to the treated area for a few minutes after the Botox treatment and will also provide you with Botox recovery instructions. The next few paragraphs will provide you basic Botox aftercare tips that would assist you.
Refrain from engaging in strenuous activities or exercises within the first twenty four hours and avoid lying down within the first four to five hours after the Botox treatment. Practice daily facial exercises as instructed by your cosmetic physician and remember to wear a sun block if you are going under the sun. Keep in mind that you are not supposed to take a sun bath, have a facial done, undergo chemical skin peel treatment or LASER resurfacing treatments for the next seven days, as it might cause post Botox bruising and lengthen the recovery time.
Should you experience heaviness or mild discomfort, you may take a Paracetamol and avoid taking Aspirins. Your cosmetic physician may prescribe anti-biotic which can be purchased over the counter.
As a safety precaution it is advisable not to repeat Botox injections more frequently than every twelve weeks as it may prevent the effectiveness of future treatments. Botox may cause or carry a risk of allergy, therefore you should keep your cosmetic physician informed about any allergies you may have and also inform him if you are using and prescribed medicines.
Should you develop an allergic reaction after the Botox treatment, immediately inform your cosmetic physician and make an appointment with him, so that necessary measures can be taken to control the effects.
Consult a cosmetic physician who is qualified and who has a lot of experience in performing Botox treatments. This would ensure that you will be in the safe hands of a well experienced cosmetic physician who will bring out the youthfulness of your skin. Also you would need to check whether the clinic is situated along with a medical facility to assure it is maintained according to the required health standards of the country.
