City Talk: Creative Futures - Fergus Linehan

Festival Director and Chief Executive of the 2006 to 2009 Sydney Festivals, Fergus Linehan was born and grew up in Dublin in a family with extensive links to the Irish arts community. He began working in the industry at 14, and founded a theatre company during his University days.

While working at the Dublin Theatre Festival throughout the 1990s, Linehan founded the Dublin Fringe Festival which went on to forge its own unique and very successful identity. He became Director of the Dublin Theatre Festival in 2000 and oversaw a major expansion of the scale and diversity of the program. As well as his work at the Dublin Theatre Festival, he was a board member of Theatre Forum, sat on the advisory council of The Abbey Theatre and was acting Chair of Theatreshop, an organisation dedicated to the promotion of Irish performing arts abroad. He is currently a member of Sydney First and a committee member of the Committee for Sydney.

City Talk: Creative Futures - Elizabeth Ann Macgregor

Scottish born, Elizabeth Ann Macgregor moved to Australia to take up the Directorship of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney in September 1999 following a distinguished career in the visual arts in the UK, which culminated in the refurbishment of a listed heritage building into a new gallery in the heart of Birmingham.

In 2000, she introduced free access to the MCA which has resulted in a threefold increase in visitor numbers, thus developing a broader audience for contemporary art in Sydney. Macgregor also successfully negotiated long-term funding for the MCA with the NSW State Government and the Australia Council, securing the Museum's stability and long-term viability. This year, the MCA was named Sydney’s favourite museum in a Chamber of Commerce survey.

Macgregor is a regular contributor to conferences, seminars, radio and television programs on arts issues. She is currently on the board of the Australian Children’s Music Foundation and member of the Council of Art Museum Directors. In 2001 she was awarded the Centenary Medal for services to the Australian public and contemporary art.

Neil Armfield is one of Australia’s foremost directors and is currently Artistic Director of Company B, at Belvoir Street Theatre, in Sydney. He is the recipient of two Doctorates of Letters (U.Syd and UNSW) and many awards which he received for his prestigious work. Neil’s highlights include The Eighth Wonder, The Blind Giant is Dancing , Peribanez, Stuff Happens, Keating!, The Marriage of Figaro for Welsh National Opera, Sweeney Todd for Lyric Opera of Chicago and Royal Opera House in Convent Garden, London and The Diary of A Madman and Exit the King, both starring Geoffrey Rush. His film CANDY, starring Heath Ledger, Geoffrey Rush and Abbie Cornish, premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and won the AFI Award for Best Adapted Screenplay (co-written with Luke Davies).
