While working at the Dublin Theatre Festival throughout the 1990s, Linehan founded the Dublin Fringe Festival which went on to forge its own unique and very successful identity. He became Director of the Dublin Theatre Festival in 2000 and oversaw a major expansion of the scale and diversity of the program. As well as his work at the Dublin Theatre Festival, he was a board member of Theatre Forum, sat on the advisory council of The Abbey Theatre and was acting Chair of Theatreshop, an organisation dedicated to the promotion of Irish performing arts abroad. He is currently a member of Sydney First and a committee member of the Committee for Sydney.
