Working closely with Australia’s security and intelligence agencies, on 27 May 2008 the National Archives of Australia released the records of the Royal Commission on Intelligence and Security (RCIS). Dr Jim Stokes, of the National Archives, speaks about the background to the Royal Commission and its recordkeeping, and about the work of the National Archives to make these records available to researchers.

Former Secretary to the Royal Commission on Intelligence and Security (RCIS), George Brownbill, tells what it was like working on the RCIS, the first inquiry into Australia’s security and intelligence agencies. Working to Royal Commissioner the Hon. Justice Robert Hope, Brownbill spent two and a half years asking difficult questions of agencies, such as ASIO, which he says were ‘badly politicised’. At the time of the RCIS, which began in 1974, most of the agencies under investigation were still largely unknown by the Australian public.

Naval historian Peter Hore talks about how he broke the coded entries in the notebook of Commander TA Detmers of the German raider HKS Kormoran – The boat that sank HMAS Sydney in 1941. Hi s groundbreaking research assisted the recent historic discovery of HMAS Sydney’s final resting place. This talk was given just before HMAS Sydney was officially found.

Peter Manning is Adjunct Professor of Journalism in the Social of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Technology, Sydney. In 1977 he was editor of the satirical weekly, Nation Review.
