On the other hand, High-density lipoproteins (HDL) cholesterol is often referred to as, “good.” HDL is a cholesterol scavenger. They take the excess cholesterol in your blood and take it to the liver, where it can be removed.

When talking about cholesterol, it is important to distinguish between HDL cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. The higher the HDL cholesterol, less bad cholesterol you’ll have in your blood. In men, HDL cholesterol levels should not be lower than 40 mg / dl. In women, HDL should be no lower than 50 mg / dL. Optimal levels for men and women are about 60 mg / dl. Total cholesterol level below 180 is the most profitable.
