As cancer treatment goes, know what to eat becomes more significant. The chapters of nausea and vomiting are almost certain. The unwillingness and episodes of diarrhea occur, can also form sores in the mouth and develop disorders of taste and smell. Are side effects that become more or less as a result of chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

In this period the diet becomes crucial. The dietary recommendations may be different from those appropriate for the healthy population, not because the recommended foods, discouraged or prohibited, for the quantities of certain ingredients. Patients undergoing treatment have to eat foods rich in calories and protein. If the general public should avoid obesity, a person with cancer should try not to lose weight.Recipes for winning the battle

Each symptom and each situation needs a particular treatment and the physician who must determine the diet. To avoid side effects, predictable and recurring nausea and vomiting-in menus through a number of simple recipes.

Tasty. The aroma and color of a dish can spark more interest in eating or just the opposite: to cause nausea if you are unwell. There is evidence that the amount of food that takes a person can vary up to 300% from one occasion to another, for the same product, if their sensory characteristics vary-odor, color, flavor, texture. This is fundamental to a person with cancer following radiotherapy and chemotherapy sessions, as their taste buds are very sensitive to these therapies. Therefore, given the reluctance and the change of taste, they have to pamper further processing and final appearance as a dish as a whole that makes up the menu on the sick person.

Be chosen more like recipes that will be developed smoothly and dispense food and spices that give off a strong smell and can induce nausea in the patient. A bowl of rice with fish can be a delicious rice to Senegal and cream style zucchini can be supplemented with pumpkin seeds. A proposed menu consists of tomato gratin, followed by a delicious and soft croquettes and hake and conger, for dessert, apple and pear compote with vanilla.

Hyperproteinic. Anorexia means loss of weight and muscle mass, with a consequent lack of protein. These nutrients are essential for repairing damaged tissue by both the tumor and by the aggressive treatment with radiation and, therefore, must be present at every meal. Investigating new and delicious recipes for fish and juicy and tasty chicken is a best way to ensure the amount of protein daily. As a source of these nutrients repairers, also advised combination of cereals and nuts as a starter-rice with asparagus and couscous with nuts and dried fruit-dessert-rice with dried fruits and nuts-energy snack, breakfast or rice pudding soy and hazelnuts. Equally successful as a source of quality protein is a mixture of legumes and cereals in the same plate, like the original recipe for lentils with rice and macaroni, the traditional noodle soup with chickpeas or hearty fideuá with peas, green beans and mushrooms .

Energy and restorative. Any soup recipe that combines vegetables and cereals such as rice, couscous or bread accompaniment is energetic and very nutritious. The addition of algae to the dishes are enriched in minerals, nutrient tonic of great value as an adjunct to diet for cancer. Furthermore, in the case of cooked like vegetables and white beans with kombu seaweed, or nori Lentil, makes them more digestible, an aspect that should take care when anorexia is revealed as one of the main factors limiting diet, an integral part of cancer therapy.

Learn how to cook sugar-sweet desserts is beneficial, as they generally combine food ingredients which results in energy and repairers. You might not need sugar to make them more healthy recipes like crispy puffed rice and nuts, seasonal fruit tart, oatmeal with dried apricots and grated apple, rice pudding and fried almonds coffee custard. All recipes are simple and energetic.

At the same time, developing recipes for cancer patients, may be appropriate to use ginger as a spice, a plant that helps fight nausea and vomiting.

Although there are few studies that examine how these variables affect the survival rate of people who have had cancer, some studies have linked weight gain after diagnosis with increased mortality in women who have had breast cancer. By contrast, an isolated body weight of overweight and obesity would be associated with better survival.

The “Guidelines recommendation of diet and physical activity” includes tips for choosing foods and beverages that help achieve and maintain a healthy weight. The basic dietary changes are:

- Pay attention to standard portion sizes and reading food labels to be aware of the number of servings consumed.
- Eat smaller portions of foods that are high in calories. The terms “low fat”, “fat” or “low sugar” does not always mean the product is low in calories.
- Choosing foods with a high density of nutrients (fruits, nuts, dried fruits, vegetables) instead of food and beverages with high caloric density (chips, pizza, ice cream, pastries, cakes, sugary soft drinks, sausages, cheeses.).
- When eating out, avoid large portions and have a preference for foods with less calories, fat and sugar.

Besides the crucial role of physical activity in weight control and, therefore, positive effects on cancer, extending growing evidence about their independent effect on survival in people diagnosed with breast cancer, colon or rectum. It is less clear, however, what the level of physical activity needed to achieve these benefits.

However, the American Cancer Society recommends for individual adult choices in physical activity of moderate to vigorous, that is additional to the regular activities and is carried out for five days or more a week. We suggest at least 30 minutes, although it is preferable from 45 to 60 minutes. In children and adolescents, individual advice is to practice moderate to vigorous activity at least 60 minutes per day for at least five days a week.

The role of this element is illustrated in consensus guidelines on exercise for cancer patients who recently edited the American College of Sports Medicine.

More generally, the so-called “prudent diet” rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, poultry and fish, appears to reduce the risk of mortality in patients diagnosed with breast cancer.

Deserve special attention to the recommendations in relation to nutritional supplements (antioxidants, vitamins, etc..). Information concerning the United States indicate that 52% of the population consumed these products and, among survivors of cancer, this percentage rises to 64-81%. However, both observational and experimental studies indicate that nutritional supplements do not improve and the prognosis or survival after diagnosis of the disease, rather just the opposite. Therefore, both the American Cancer Society and the Global Fund for Research on Cancer and the American Institute for Cancer Research recommends that people who have had this disease to meet their nutritional needs, wherever possible, from food.

Having had a cancer associated with a series of long-term consequences, both psychological and physical. Of these measures included, among the most common, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and other endocrine disorders, osteoporosis and osteopenia.

It is known that people who have had cancer die more often from cardiovascular disease than the rest of the population. Thus, nutritional interventions based on scientific evidence and which seek prevention and treatment of these consequences are necessary once the disease.

Since 2003, the American Cancer Society included in its “Guidelines recommendations for diet and physical activity for cancer prevention,” some points aimed at those who had overcome the disease. The Global Fund for Research on Cancer and the American Institute for Cancer Research also addressed the issue in its 2007 report.

However, these organizations emphasize the lack of studies designed specifically to survivors of this disease, so their recommendations are the same as those aimed at primary prevention of it. The cardinal points are summarized as follows: a diet rich in vegetables, fruits and whole grains, reduce the consumption of meat and alcohol, maintaining a healthy weight and practice regular physical activity.

These health institutions urge the public, private and community work together to create physical and social environments that help people adopt and maintain healthy eating behaviors and physical activity. Considered necessary:

- Increase access to healthy foods in schools, workplaces and communities.
- Provide appropriate, safe and welcome in schools, designed to encourage physical activity.
- Providing security for the physical transportation (as cycling, running or walking), as well as recreational activities in communities.

A survey by the British Nutrition Foundation said that those who do not eat meat, have less chance of getting cancer, although more prone to colorectal evils.

According to research published in the medical journal American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, opens an interesting door to all those that take a vegetarian, since the chances of developing cancer would be decreased as interesting as compared to those who have a omnivore diet.

The research, conducted among more than 50,000 men and women and made from the 90s, depart that those who had this type of feeding had shown having a lower number of tumors compared to meat eaters. Anyway, in case of colorectal problems, the incidence had increased, contrary to what I always believed.

According to Joanne Lunn, a nutritionist at the British Nutrition Foundation “when you look in detail their diet, carnivores were compared with those who are vegetarians eat only moderate amounts of meat every day,” exemplified the specialist. He added that “both groups also meet the recommendation to consume at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day”, but still showed healthy eating in this regard.

According to the latest statistics available, internationally, the World Health Organization considers that about 60% of cancers in women and 50% of cancers in men, are final and directly related to diet and nutrition.

Some autopsy studies have shown that almost one third of men over 50 years of age, have microscopic prostate tumors, an amount that increases with age.

Aging is the primary risk factor for prostate cancer. The average age of diagnosis is 70 years. The diagnosis can be made by means of digital rectal examination, through which the doctor feels the prostate through the rectal wall. The PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) is a protein produced by prostate cells that is often present at high levels in the blood of men with prostate cancer.

Treatment depends on the stage where the cancer is discovered, the age and overall health of the patient. Surgery and radiation therapy are options for cancer that is confined to the prostate. Hormone therapy is most commonly used in metastatic prostate cancer and may include orchiectomy (surgical removal of the testicles) or medicines that reduce the effects of male hormones. Other therapies have most modern and sophisticated percutaneous cryosurgical ablation prostate, monoclonal antibodies and radiation therapy with a proton beam.

Impotence is the most common side effect of long-term treatment of prostate cancer. Radiation therapy causes impotence in about 40 to 50% of patients.

Several scientists have not only confirmed that a proper diet can prevent prostate cancer, now believe that even the diet can be used to treat it. His latest discovery, a low-fat diet may slow prostate cancer growth, caused a researcher at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Dr. Heston wrote in Journal of the National Cancer Institute (October 4, 1995, 87 :1456-62) that “the dietary change from high to low in fat resulted in a slower tumor growth even after the formation of measurable tumors.

In the study of this cancer center, some rats were injected with cells from human prostate cancer. Animals that were given a diet of about 21% of calories from fat, 50% had slower tumor growth than those animals on a diet of 40% fat. And for example, the average American diet is consumed at present has about 36% of calories from fat.

Epidemiological research has consistently suggested the connection between diets high in fat and cancer. Another example, the incidence of prostate cancer for white Americans is 37% higher than that of the Chinese, who eat a diet low in fat. Japan also is a low-fat eaters and has a cancer incidence of 25% less than the U.S.. UU. One would be tempted to think that these differences may be due to the result of genetics. However, we must not overlook those Japanese men who move to the USA. UU. experience a significant increase in risk of prostate cancer. Moreover, as the Japanese cities have increased their consumption of foods high in fat, their incidences of cancer have also risen, while the rural Japanese stick to your diet low in fat, have not experienced a similar rise in cases of cancer.

Prostate cancer is generally very slow in their growth and often does cause problems to old age. As a result of several investigations, many scientists now believe that many of the older men with prostate cancer do not need anything but certain dietary adjustments to halt the progression of their disease (J. Coll. Nutr. Vol. 12 No. 3, 1993).

The natural approach to prostate cancer involves four steps. The first is to reduce congestion in the lower pelvic area, which is to improve circulation. The second step is to eat a specific diet to improve prostate health. Eat a diet high in soy products because they contain isoflavones that help detoxify the dihydrotestosterone. The third step is to prescribe the appropriate nutritional supplements, whether minerals, vitamins, amino acids or enzymes, according to the dietary profile of each patient. The fourth step is the use of medicinal plants such as saw palmetto containing active substances that inhibit the formation of dihydrotestosterone from testosterone (by inhibiting the enzyme 5 alpha reductase which converts). Another plant used is the Pygeum africanum, which also limits the formation of dihydrotestosterone and decreases the levels of prolactin (a pituitary hormone related to the prostate and sexual function).

The cause of breast cancer is not known but we do know some risk factors. It is considered a risk factor that situation that increases the chance of developing the disease.
Keep in mind that women who are more likely to develop breast cancer (by having more risk factors) can take preventive measures to reduce the likelihood and periodic revisions or changes in your lifestyle.

RISK FACTORS

** Sex
Breast cancer occurs mainly in women though. It can also affect men but the probability is much lower.

** Age
An elderly carries an increased number of cancers. 60% of breast tumors occur in women over 60 years. This percentage increases much more after 75 years.

** Genes
There are two identified genes that, when any change in them (mutation) are associated with an increased likelihood of developing breast cancer. These genes are called BRCA1 and BRCA2, and according to some studies it seems that between 50% and 60% of women who have inherited the mutated genes can develop cancer before age 70.

** Family history
When a first-degree relative (mother, sister, daughter) had breast cancer doubles the risk of autism. If this is a more distant relative (grandmother, aunt, cousin) increases the risk only slightly.

** Personal history
A previous benign breast disease seems to increase risk in women who have a large number of ducts. Still, this risk is moderate. Some abnormal breast biopsy may be related to a slightly elevated risk of breast cancer. The risk of developing cancer in the other breast in women who have had breast cancer is different from the first recurrence or recurrence of cancer.

** Race
White women are more likely to get breast cancer than blacks, although mortality is higher in the latter, probably because they were detected at more advanced stages. Those with less risk of autism are Asian and Hispanic women.

** Menstrual periods
The sooner you start to menstruation (before age 12), the greater the risk (two to four times higher) for this disease compared with those who started later (after 14 years). The same occurs with menopause, women with late menopause (after age 55) are at increased risk. Pregnancy after age 30 also increases risk. These factors, although very frequent, often have little impact on cancer risk.

FACTORS RELATED TO LIFESTYLE

** Long term use of contraceptives
Recent studies have shown that prolonged use of contraceptives is not related to breast cancer.

Hormone replacement therapy **
This therapy, which is used to relieve symptoms of menopause appears to increase long-term (more than 10 years) the risk of breast cancer, although studies in this regard are not conclusive dle.

** Alcohol
Alcohol consumption for years is clearly linked to elevated risk of breast cancer.

Overweight **
Excess weight appears to be associated with a higher risk of having this disease, although there is no evidence that a particular type of diet (high fat diet) increases the risk.

We must bear these risk factors, and avoid those that can. Also be aware that, currently, between 70% and 80% of all breast cancers occur in women without risk factors apply and that only 5% to 10% have a genetic origin for possessing the mutated BRCA1 genes and BRCA2. At present there are some clearly defined criteria to recommend the completion of these tests. It is not enough, for example, having a relative with breast cancer (mother or sister) to indicate its completion.

What is mesothelioma?

The mesothelioma is cancer of the cells making up the lining around the outside of the lungs and inside of the ribs (pleura), or around the abdominal organs (peritoneum). Mesothelioma is a very rare type of cancer in which cancer cells invade the mesothelium, the protective cover that covers most internal organs.

What has to do with asbestos mesothelioma?

The only known cause of mesothelioma in the U.S. is previous exposure to asbestos fibers. The asbestos manufacturers knew of the dangers of asbestos seventy years ago – but they kept this knowledge secret. The first warnings of danger which gave the workers were in the mid-1960s, and these warnings were terribly inadequate. Even today, they are not always informs workers that are working around asbestos and are at risk of contracting an asbestos disease.

The mesothelium is composed of two layers of cells: one layer is in contact with the organ, while the latter forms a bag around. The mesothelium produces a lubricating fluid that allows the layers to slide over one another allowing the movements of the body covering (eg, lungs). Depending on their position, the mesothelium get a particular name: the one that surrounds the lungs is called pleura, around the heart called pericardium, which surrounds the testicles is called the tunica vaginalis testis and surrounding the uterus is called uterine serous tunic. Most abdominal organs are covered by peritoneum.

Pleural Mesothelioma

Pleural Mesothelioma is the most common, its incidence being 9 times higher than the peritoneal mesothelioma. It is more common in men than in women, being the age of onset of symptoms between 50 to 70 years with a latency period of 20 to 40 years. In 80% of cases the etiology is exposure to asbestos dust. Other possible causes of mesothelioma are radiation therapy and polio vaccines contaminated with simian virus SV40. The pleural mesothelioma is about 3% of malignant neoplasms of the pleura, and when the diagnosis is made rapidly and its course is invariably fatal, usually during the next two years.

The most common clinical presentation is diffuse chest pain, which occasionally can be pleuritic or radiating to the shoulder accompanied by pleural effusions. Dyspnea, cough, weakness, malaise and fatigue are usually in advanced stages of disease. In 89% of cases, the abnormal electrocardiogram abnormalities being more frequent sinus tachycardia (42%), ventricular or atrial arrhythmias (17%) and blockage of a branch bundle (30%)

The most common radiographic finding is of an irregular opacity in the lung periphery, associated with ipsilateral pleural effusion, with evidence of deflation, contraction of the hemithorax committed and no shift of the mediastinum to the opposite side, despite significant pleural effusions (*) The diagnosis should be suspected when pleural thickening is found surrounding the lung trap and secured to the mediastinum.

From the histological point of view, the mesoepitelioma is classified into 3 types:

* Epithelioid covering 50% of cases and generally better prognosis and life expectancy;
* Sarcomatoid happens between 7 to 20% of cases;
* Mixed or biphasic occurs in 20 to 35% of cases,

Diagnosis of Pleural Mesothelioma

The diagnosis of pleural mesothelioma is often difficult because the symptoms are similar to many other conditions. The diagnosis begins with a review of medical history, followed by a complete physical examination including a chest radiograph and pulmonary function studies. CT and MRI can be useful in determining the extent and location of the lesion.

To confirm the diagnosis requires a biopsy can be done by thoracoscopy (*) or, if this is not possible through conventional surgery. Once the existence doagnóstico, determine that the stage of the disease in order to proceed with the best treatment
