World Diabetes Day 2008 He writing “held” in quotes because I do not think it is an occasion to celebrate. It is a very sad fact that more and more people with diabetes, and especially that they are dramatically increasing cases of children with diabetes.

For me personally, and with all due respect to those who strive to change things, I think a failure of our health systems and government. Why else have a technology thousands of times more advanced than 50 years ago, the number of people suffering from diabetes is increasing exponentially? Is not is supposed to be the reverse: it improves the technology and science = better health? Then think not. In this case improves the technology and science while worsening the health of people.

And I wonder, how can this be happening? The obvious answer that comes to mind is that perhaps we are wrong path. It tries to control (that does not mean cure) symptoms that are not only the reflection, the body’s reaction to a cause that can be varied according to each person.

I think that we will “celebrate” World Diabetes Day for many years, until there is a change of mentality and attention is directed scientific, health and politics to remove and cure the real cause of the symptoms we perceive to be thirsty, need constantly urinating, rapid weight loss, lack of energy … and we call diabetes.

Of course, if we get there we need to change things from below, the people, because it seems that those above are not willing to sacrifice power and economic benefits for the health of the people they are supposed to represent.

Many times, a sum of small changes is what makes it will eventually get big changes. For example, the other day I read that eating beans (beans) is crucial to reversing diabetes mellitus and cancer because the bean is a food that less rise in blood glucose. It has been found that consumption of beans on a regular basis are able to control the level of fats and glucose in the blood, and helps control metabolism in general and thereby prevent diabetes and cancer, two of the leading causes of death in many countries (Mexico a major).

It seems at least curious that in the past 10 years has begun to die out by generations of tradition that had placed the beans as an important food in Mexico. And coincidentally (or not so coincidentally) in recent years has increased the number of diabetics becoming one of the leading causes of death.

Do not have anything to do these two things? Are not these little changes we make in our eating habits and lifestyle that we are consuming our body little by little? Every time we eat worse food (even if you can call them that) too refined, canned or ready to heat. Every time we move less, being more and more time sitting in front of a television, computer, video console or just sitting because. Every time we receive less vitamin D from the sun, and when you are exposed to the sun so that we do our body burns (sun too soon).

Let’s start there, by making small changes in these patterns of consumption and lifestyle and see how our bodies and makes us grateful for what was created to do: heal itself.

Of course, for many years now with these symptoms (which many call diabetes) may need extra help, but the goal is the same: to heal, not only control the disease.

As you have checked, I did not talk about the number of monuments and historic buildings around the world tomorrow will be light blue in commemoration of World Diabetes Day, and planned activities, because I assume that is what who will speak for 99% of articles that will appear tomorrow.

You know me, I like to put the nail on the head occasionally and go upstream.

Do not hesitate to leave your comments on what this day means, what has been done in your community, or anything that you may have wanted to share with others.

For those who may know English, this link you can see one of the videos that have prepared for this day international agencies. Saddest of all, I think the comment of the English child saying that diabetes is part of his life and can not do anything about it. Telling a child that there is nothing he can do to change a situation or circumstance is like pulling the wings off a bird. Who knows, maybe that child would find more a cure for this disease if you leave him intact his imagination, creativity and teach him to believe that is possible.
