Awareness of Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. The two types of common skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma have a high chance of cure. However, the melanoma, the third type of common skin cancer is more dangerous, especially in young people. Most melanomas are caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight or tanning beds.

About 65.161 people die every year because of the sun, the majority of malignant skin cancers.
It is estimated that about 160,000 new cases of melanoma each year. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, causing an estimated 48,000 deaths annually.
Two to three million cases of skin cancer other than melanoma (predominantly basal and squamous cell carcinoma) are diagnosed each year.
